The Forces Behind the New Way of Working

Labour markets have undergone significant changes over the past couple of years because of COVID-19. The pandemic has sped up these labour market transformations and will continue to disrupt them. So far in 2022 we can see themes now shaping the future of what we know as work.

Remote & Hybrid Working

Initially the with COVID-19 it made people rethink their work. After examining their working patterns, cultures, and values, multiple companies have made the decision to invest in remote and hybrid working. The number of paid roles with the ability to work remotely doubled over the course of 1 year (2020-2021). Data shows that in November 2020, 6.5% of all jobs available at that time offered remote work while by November 2021 this number had risen to 12.6%. To attract good talent, employers are looking for ways to make their workplaces as inclusive as possible. This is something that will happen more and more in the future.

Signing Onto New Jobs

Employees are reconsidering why they work, what they want to do with their career, and what matters most to them in life. Even though the past couple of years have seen some interesting changes and self-reflection among employees around the world, data shows that nowadays people are voting with their feet (i.e. quitting their jobs if it doesn’t fit). Workers are also reflecting something similar and are more likely to enter new industries in the US. It’s possible that they hear better compensation, don’t have to worry about fitting in and can progress their careers better once they have already entered the industry. It’s not difficult to see how this is fuelling real change with employees being much more empowered to negotiate what they want. The labor market right now is the best it has been in a long time and is only going to get better!

Health Care Jobs

One of the growing industries which may be obvious now is the healthcare sector. The pandemic created various new and rapidly growing career opportunities in this sector. As health concerns and issues continue to rise we also see these jobs to continue to grow in the future.
